An Interdisciplinary Resource for Creativity, Technology, and Innovation 

The CREATE_space is an interdisciplinary hub within the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts at 黑料视频. We support the creative work of College of Fine Arts students, faculty, and staff, providing resources for artistic research, experimentation, and collaboration that connect the arts, technology, and entrepreneurship. 

Our mission is to foster an environment where innovation and collaboration thrive鈥攅mpowering artists, scholars, and makers to bring bold ideas to life through access to tools, training, and support for creative exploration.

We provide a variety of services to meet your project needs, including:

Central Checkout: Borrow digital cameras, audio equipment, and other AV tools for your creative projects.

This page contains all the information you need to know before your appointment. If you have additional questions, please schedule a consultation appointment.

What to Expect for Your Appointment

  1. Schedule an appointment 
    • Fill out all required fields to help staff assist you effectively.
  2. Bring your university ID and be prepared for the appointment to take up to 30 minutes.
  3. First-time users will need to complete a registration form to be added to the system.
  4. You may be asked questions about your equipment needs to ensure the best selection.
  5. Staff will gather and inspect the equipment to confirm all parts are present and functional. This process takes time.
  6. You will receive a reminder to schedule a return appointment for the equipment.
  7. You are responsible for any damage to the equipment you check out.
    • DO NOT LOAN EQUIPMENT TO OTHERS. Any damages or missing items will be charged to the original borrower.

Policies

  • A university ID is required for all equipment checkouts.
  • Outstanding Equipment:
    • If you have unreturned equipment from a previous academic year, you cannot check out new equipment until it is returned or renewed.
  • Equipment Renewals:
    • To renew equipment, you must return all items (including accessories and parts) to CREATE_space for a quality check before renewal.
  • Lost or Damaged Equipment:
    • Any missing or damaged equipment may result in charges or account holds for the individual who checked it out.
  • End-of-Semester Returns:
    • All equipment must be returned before the end of the semester to avoid charges or holds on your account.
  • Break Period Checkouts:
    • Equipment may be checked out over breaks, but must be renewed before the break begins.
    • Only returning students, faculty, or staff can renew break-period checkouts.
    • Graduating students must return all equipment before leaving.
  • Loaning Equipment:
    • Do not loan CREATE_space equipment to others. Each borrower is solely responsible for items checked out under their name. Loaning equipment to others is strictly prohibited.

Bringing Your Own Paper: 

  • Users are permitted to bring their own paper for printing. However,鈥痭ot all papers are approved by the manufacturer. If you want to use personal paper, please schedule a鈥痗onsultation appointment鈥痠n advance. 

File Requirements 

  • Accepted File Types:鈥疶IFF, PSD
    • May bring鈥疛PG鈥痠f select鈥渇irst time printing assistance鈥濃痺hen making appointment. 
  • Color Space:鈥疐iles must be set to鈥疪GB鈥痓efore submission. 
  • File Submission:
    • Files must be brought to CREATE_space on a鈥疷SB-A flash drive. 

Canvas/Layout Size Guidelines 

  • Paper Widths:
    • Please see above available paper sizes.  Not all sizes will be available at all times, email to confirm if you need a specific paper width.  
  • Canvas/Layout Size Limitations:
    • The recommended height鈥痵hould not exceed 60 inches.
    • The maximum printable area per image is鈥44鈥 (width) 脳 60鈥 (height).
    • If printing鈥痬ultiple images, they must be鈥痜ormatted on a single canvas/layout鈥痶hat does鈥痭ot exceed 44鈥 脳 60鈥.

What to Expect for Your Appointment 

  1. Schedule an appointment鈥.
    1. Fill out all required fields to allow staff to prepare equipment in advance. 
  1. Bring your university ID and a payment method鈥(credit/debit card).
    1. You must pay for your print before leaving.鈥疷npaid prints鈥痗annot be taken鈥痜rom CREATE_space. 
  1. Bring your file(s) on a USB-A flash drive. 
  1. Ensure your image is properly prepared.
    1. If you are鈥痷nsure how to prepare your file, refer to鈥"How to Prepare My Images"鈥痓elow.
    2. If this is your鈥痜irst time printing, select the鈥"first-time printing assistance"鈥痮ption when making your appointment. Staff can teach you how to鈥痵et up your images. 
  1. File Submission & Printing Process:
    1. Staff will import your file into Photoshop and prepare it for printing.
    2. Staff may ask鈥痗larifying questions鈥痶o ensure the best print quality.
    3. Staff will鈥痯rint your image(s). 
  1. Payment & Receipt Process:
    1. After printing, you must pay online鈥.
    2. Staff will鈥痗alculate the total cost鈥痑nd can email you an invoice if requested.
    3. You must use your鈥痷niversity email鈥痶o log in for payment.
    4. Once payment is completed, you will receive an鈥痑utomated email with a receipt number.
    5. Staff will鈥痩og the receipt number as proof of payment. 
  1. Drying & Pickup:
    1. Depending on the image and material, prints may need to鈥痙ry before trimming.
    2. You may pick up the print鈥痩ater the same day鈥痙uring open hours鈥痺ithout an appointment.
    3. CREATE_space has鈥痑 paper cutter鈥痑vailable for trimming excess paper. 

How to Prepare My Images 

Step 1: Open Photoshop & Create a New Document 

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop. 
  1. Create a new document鈥痺ith the following settings:
    1. Width:鈥疭et width based on paper selection. See above Canvas/Layout Guidelines.
    2. Height:鈥疍esired image height鈥+ 1 inch margin
    3. Color Profile:鈥痵RGB
    4. Color Mode:鈥疪GB Color
    5. Resolution:鈥300 dpi
    6. 叠补肠办驳谤辞耻苍诲:鈥疻丑颈迟别&苍产蝉辫;

Step 2: Import Your Image(s) 

  1. Drag and drop your鈥痠mage(s) onto the Photoshop artboard. 

Step 3: Ensure the Image is Correctly Sized 

  • Verify that the image鈥痬atches the intended print size. 
  • Common Issue: Unflattened Images
    • If an image appears incorrect, it may鈥痭ot be flattened.
    • To check:
      • Open the image in a separate Photoshop tab.
      • Flatten the image: Go to鈥疞ayer > Flatten Image.
      • Confirm that it is鈥痵ized correctly: Go to鈥疘mage > Image Size.
      • Confirm that the resultion is correct: Go to鈥疘mage > Image Size.
      • Once the image is flattened,鈥痵ave a new file鈥痑nd鈥痳eimport it into the artboard.
    • If necessary:
      • Adjust鈥痠mage orientation鈥痶o鈥痮ptimize paper use.
      • Example: An鈥8脳10 image鈥痵hould be oriented鈥8 inches vertical鈥痶o minimize paper waste.
      • Once the image is flattened,鈥痵ave a new file鈥痑nd鈥痳eimport it into the artboard. 

Step 4: Final Save & USB Transfer 

  1. Once all images are imported onto the artboard,鈥痗enter them鈥痮n the board.
  2. Save the final file as TIFF or PSD.
  3. Transfer the file to a鈥疷SB-A flash drive鈥痜or submission at CREATE_space.
Laser Cutting: Create precise designs on a variety of materials such as acrylic, wood, and cardboard.

Equipment

    • Plywood & Wood
    • Paper
    • Acrylic鈥(Must provide a receipt verifying it is acrylic and not polycarbonate/Lexan.)
    • Cardboard 
  • User-Supplied Materials:
    • Users鈥痬ust bring their own materials鈥痜or the laser cutter.
    • It is鈥痳ecommended to bring scrap material鈥痜or鈥痶est cuts鈥痓efore finalizing a project.
    • Materials鈥痬ust not be warped by more than 1/8鈥, as excessive warping can鈥痗ompromise the focal length鈥痑nd鈥痙amage the equipment. 

File Requirements 

  • Accepted File Types:
    • Vector Files鈥(for cutting & engraving):鈥疉I (preferred), PDF, SVG, DXF,
    • Raster Files鈥(for engraving only):鈥疛PG, PNG 
  • File Preparation:
    • If your project contains鈥痬ultiple layers鈥痜or different actions (e.g., cutting and engraving),鈥痙o not flatten your file鈥痓efore submission.
    • Files must be brought to CREATE_space staff on a鈥疷SB-A flash drive.
    • CREATE_space staff are not responsible for resizing or modifying files before printing. 

Policies 

  • Maximum Material Size:鈥22鈥 脳 34鈥濃(recommended maximum: 20鈥 脳 32鈥) 
  • Maximum Cutting Thickness:鈥3/8鈥濃(recommended maximum: 录鈥 or less) 
  • Material Restrictions:
    • Only鈥痯lywood, wood, paper, cardboard, and acrylic鈥痑re approved for general use.
    • Other materials require a consultation appointment before cutting. 
  • Prohibited Materials:
    • Any material containing鈥痗hlorine
    • Reflective materials
    • PVC, vinyl, fiberglass, printed circuit boards
    • Resins, carbon fiber, polycarbonate/Lexan, ABS, and all types of foam 

Safety Guidelines 

  • Fumes & Air Quality:
    • The鈥疌O2 laser vaporizes material鈥痺hich can produce strong odors.
    • If you are鈥痵ensitive to smells, an鈥疦95 mask can be provided, or you may鈥痺ait outside鈥痙uring the cutting process. 
  • Eye Protection:
    • Do not look directly at the emitted light.鈥疶he laser emits鈥疷V rays that can damage eyesight.
    • Proper鈥痚ye protection is available鈥痷pon request. 
  • Ear Protection
    • Ear protection is provided and is mandatory.  
  • Electrical & Fire Safety:
    • Do not touch the machine while it is operating.
    • The laser cutter鈥痷ses high voltage鈥痑nd poses a risk of鈥痚lectric shock.
    • Never open the machine while it is running.
    • This machine鈥痯oses a fire risk.
    • If a fire occurs,鈥疌REATE_space staff are trained to respond.
    • If a fire鈥痗annot be contained, evacuate the building immediately. 

What to Expect for Your Appointment 

  1. Schedule an appointment鈥
    1. Fill out all required fields so staff can prepare for your session. 
  1. Bring your university ID鈥痑nd expect鈥痵etup to take up to 15 minutes. 
  1. Material Inspection:
    1. Give your material to a staff member for鈥痠nspection.
    2. If you are using鈥痑crylic, provide the鈥痳eceipt proving it is acrylic.
    3. Bringing鈥痚xtra material (scrap)鈥痜or test cuts is鈥痟ighly recommended. 
  1. File Submission:
    1. Provide your file(s) to staff鈥痮n a USB-A flash drive.
    2. Files must be鈥痵ized correctly and prepped for cutting/engraving.
    3. If your project involves鈥痬ultiple actions鈥(e.g., cutting, engraving at different depths), your file鈥痬ust not be flattened, and each action should be鈥痮n a separate layer. 
  1. File Processing & Setup:
    1. Staff will鈥痠mport your file into LightBurn鈥痑nd review your settings with you.
    2. Staff will discuss鈥痯otential issues鈥(e.g., overlapping cut/engrave lines) that may affect results.
    3. Staff may鈥痯erform test cuts/engravings鈥痶o calibrate settings. 
  1. Laser Cutting Process:
    1. Once settings are finalized, staff will:
      1. Calibrate all settings鈥痜or accurate cutting/engraving.
      2. Send the鈥痜inal file(s) to the laser cutter.
      3. Turn on safety equipment, including:
        1. Exhaust fan
        2. Air compressor 
  1. The laser cutter is loud.鈥 Ear protection will be provided and it is mandatory for all parties present. 
  1. Final Quality Check & Pickup:
    1. When the cut/engraving is complete:
      1. Staff will鈥痯artially open the laser door鈥痶o allow鈥痜inal venting.
      2. Staff will鈥痗onduct a quality check.
      3. If adjustments are needed, the file may need to be鈥痳e-run.
    2. Staff will give you鈥痽our finished piece. 
  1. Cleanup & Storage:
    1. Dispose of waste material鈥痠n the provided trash receptacle.
    2. Material Storage (if applicable):
      1. If you plan to鈥痳eturn for additional cuts/engravings, storage space is available.
      2. All stored materials must be labeled鈥痺ith:
        1. First and last name
        2. Phone Number
        3. University Email
      3. If you do not plan to return, you must take all materials with you. 
3D Printing: Fabricate models or prototypes.

Equipment

  • Bambu P1S 3D Printer (1)

Materials

  • CREATE_space Provided Filament:
    • PLA filament (preferred, available in a variety of colors)
  • User-Provided Filament:
    • Users may bring their own filament.
    • Only filaments approved by Bambu Labs for the Bambu P1S 3D Printer are allowed.
    • Users must provide proof of filament type and manufacturer approval from Bambu Labs before printing.

File Requirements

  • Accepted File Types: STL or OBJ
  • File Submission:
    • Files must be brought to CREATE_space on a USB-A flash drive.
    • Other ports are not available on CREATE_space computers.

Policies

  • Maximum Print Size: 10鈥 脳 10鈥 脳 10鈥
  • Print Duration Limitations:
    • Prints must be completed within CREATE_space open hours.
    • For medium to large prints, it is recommended to reserve morning slots.
    • If a larger print is needed, schedule a consultation appointment before reserving time.
  • Supervised Printing Requirement:
    • All prints must be monitored for their entire duration.
    • Users must sit with their print or arrange for someone to monitor it.
    • Unattended prints will result in immediate revocation of access to CREATE_space equipment.

What to Expect for Your Appointment

  1. Schedule an appointment 
    • Fill out all required fields to help staff assist you effectively.
  2. Bring your university ID and expect the setup process to take up to 30 minutes.
    • Be prepared to monitor your print for the entire duration.
    • Staff will explain how to monitor prints and what to do in case of print failure.
  3. Bring your file(s) on a USB-A flash drive in STL or OBJ format.
  4. Staff will import your file into Bambu Studio to prepare it for printing.
  5. Staff may ask clarifying questions about your print settings (e.g., print quality, material selection).
  6. Print Scheduling:
    • Staff will provide an estimated print time.
    • You will determine if you can stay for the entire print or reschedule for a later time.
  7. Print Execution:
    • If printing the same day, staff will:
      • Load the file and filament into the Bambu P1S printer.
      • Turn on necessary safety equipment.
      • Begin the print process.
  8. Print Monitoring:
    • Staff will observe the initial portion of the print to ensure proper adhesion and quality.
    • Staff will instruct you on how to monitor the print and when to seek assistance if issues arise.
    • Staff remains on-site and available for any concerns.
  9. User Print Responsibility:
    • Users must actively monitor their print.
    • Unattended prints may cause printer damage or fire hazards.
    • Failure to monitor a print will result in immediate revocation of CREATE_space access.
  10. Completion & Pickup:
    • Once the print is finished and the build plate has cooled, staff will remove the print and hand it to you.
CNC: Achieve precise cuts and carvings on wood, or wood composites. Ideal for both intricate designs and large-scale fabrication.

Safety Guidelines 

  • Fumes & Air Quality:
    • The CNC creates sawdust,鈥痺hich is harmful to breathe.
    • If you are鈥痚nter the cage during operation, an鈥疦95 mask is mandatory and provided. 
  • Eye Protection: 

    • If you are鈥痚nter the cage during operation, an鈥痜ace shield is mandatory and provided. 
  • Ear Protection
    • Ear protection is provided and is mandatory.  

What to Expect for Your Appointment 

  1. Schedule an appointment鈥
    1. Select 鈥楥onsultation鈥 and then 鈥楥NC鈥.  All CNC projects must have a consultation appointment.
    2. Fill out all required fields so staff can prepare for your session. 
  1. Bring your university ID and your file(s) on a USB-A flashdrive. 
  1. At the consultation appointment we will:
    1. Go over your file(s) & desired outcomes.
    2. Select a date and time for material drop off & file review. 
  1. You will need to come back to CREATE_space to drop off material and review the simulation of your project.
    1. Once we have received confirmation that the simulation is correct we will select a date and time for CNCing.  
  1. We will run your files.
    1. Staff will complete the cut(s)/engraving(s) and contact you to schedule a pickup time.   
Plotting: Cut or score large-format materials such as paper, cardstock, and adhesive-backed media with high precision. Ideal for technical drawings, stencils, and contour-cut projects.

Materials 

  • Approved Materials:
    • Adhesive Vinyl
    • Paper
    • Some cardstock 
  • User-Supplied Materials:
    • Users鈥痬ust bring their own materials鈥痜or the Plotter.

  • Accepted File Types:
    • Adobe Illustrator (.ai) 

Policies

    • Cutting/Drawing Area: 22鈥漻34鈥 

Safety Guidelines 

  • Sharps:
    • When plotter is loaded with a blade, user should make no contact with cutting surface or cutting head.   
  • Ear Protection
    • Ear protection is provided and is mandatory.

    1. Select 鈥楥onsultation鈥 and then 鈥楶lotter鈥.  All Plotter projects must have a consultation appointment.
    2. Fill out all required fields so staff can prepare for your session. 
  1. Bring your university ID and your file(s) on a USB-A flashdrive. 
  1. At the consultation appointment we will:
    1. Go over your file(s) & desired outcomes.
    2. Select a date and time for running the file.
    3. User may return on the scheduled date to observe plotter if desired.  
  1. We will run your files.
    1. Staff will complete the cut(s)/drawings(s) and contact you to schedule a pickup time.
