OHIO faculty presented awards for outstanding teaching, research, service
黑料视频 faculty members were honored for their outstanding teaching, research and commitment to student success at the annual Faculty Awards Recognition Ceremony, held April 16 in the Walter Hall Rotunda.
Vice Provost for Faculty Development Katie Hartman opened the event by thanking the faculty for their outstanding work and referencing OHIO鈥檚 mission.
鈥淭onight, we will recognize outstanding faculty members who hold the door open to higher education so that all those eager to solve humanity's most urgent challenges enter to learn, connecting them with experiences and discovery that will help them think critically, care deeply, lead boldly, and ultimately depart to serve,鈥 Hartman said.
The event honored the winners of numerous faculty teaching, research and service awards, including the Presidential Teaching Award, Provost鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching and University Professor Award, while also recognizing faculty members who had taken part in professional programs throughout the year.
Presidential Teaching Award

The winner of this year鈥檚 Presidential Teacher Award is Sabrina Curran, associate professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Presidential Teacher Award recognizes excellence in teaching and academic pursuits both inside and outside of the classroom, as acknowledged by peers and students. Presidential Teachers implement highly effective teaching practices and innovations, influence the curriculum, mentor students and colleagues, and engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Award winners hold the title of Presidential Teacher for three years.
The finalists for this year鈥檚 Presidential Teaching Award were also honored at the ceremony. They are:
- Mel Brandau, associate professor in the School of Nursing in the College of Health Sciences and Professions.
- Muriel Gallego, associate professor in the Department of Modern Languages in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Angela Hosek, professor in the School of Communication Studies, Scripps College of Communication.
Provost鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching

The winner of the Provost鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching is Andie Walla, associate professor of instruction in the School of Media Arts and Studies in the Scripps College of Communication.
The Provost鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes excellence in teaching and meritorious academic pursuits both inside and outside the classroom, as acknowledged by peers and students. Each winner of the award holds the title of Provost Teacher for three years.
The finalists for this year鈥檚 Provost鈥檚 Award for Excellence in Teaching are:
- Tiffany Arnold, associate professor of instruction in the Department of Social and Public Health in the College of Health Sciences and Professions.
- Uzoma Miller, assistant professor of instruction and undergraduate advising coordinator in the Department of African-American Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Holly Ningard, associate professor of instruction in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
University Professor Award
Each year, undergraduate students at 黑料视频 bestow the honor of University Professor on full-time, tenure-track or instructional faculty. Winners of the award then have the freedom to develop and teach a course of their choosing during the following academic year.
This year, the student selection committee chose four faculty members to receive the University Professor Award. The 2025-2026 University Professors and their proposed courses are:
- Victoria LaPoe, professor in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism in the Scripps College of Communication. LaPoe鈥檚 proposed course is titled Artificial Intelligence, Ethical Sourcing, and Standpoint Theory. The proposed course will explore community standpoint theory and what it means for media to interview those impacted by stories. It will evaluate lived experiences reported on in comparison to officials telling stories about people and their lived experiences.
- Maria Postigo, associate professor of instruction in the Department of Modern Languages, College of Arts and Sciences. Postigo鈥檚 proposed course is titled Legal Spanish. The proposed course is designed for pre-law majors interested in working with Hispanic clients, international studies majors, and undergraduate liberal arts majors who are wishing to expand their awareness of the Spanish language or are seeking positions in the legal field.
- Linda Rice, professor in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences. Rice鈥檚 proposed course is titled C.S. Lewis, Sigmund Freud, and Questions of Life Meaning and Purpose. This course immerses students in readings, film, and discussion about compelling questions related to God, love, sex, and the meaning of life.
- Kathleen Sullivan, professor in the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences. Sullivan鈥檚 proposed course is titled Deciding Like a Justice: Mock Supreme Court. In this course, students will get the chance to assume the role of a justice to see what it鈥檚 like to use the law to obscure political commitments, whether the politics be ideological, partisan, or institutional.
Rising Star Teacher Award

The winner of the Rising Star Teacher Award is Paul Shovlin, assistant professor in the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Rising Star Teacher Award recognizes excellence in teaching and academic pursuits both inside and outside the classroom, as acknowledged by peers and students. It acknowledges faculty early in their careers at OHIO.
The finalists for this year鈥檚 Rising Star Teacher Award are:
- Rebekah Crawford, assistant professor in the Department of Social Public Health in the College of Health Sciences and Professions.
- Courtney Koestler, associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education in the Patton College of Education.
Emerging Presidential Research Scholars
The Emerging Presidential Research Scholar Award recognizes outstanding, emerging tenure-track faculty who have demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship and creative activity.
This year鈥檚 winners of the Emerging Presidential Research Scholar award are:
- Victoria Lee, associate professor in the History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Brett Peters, associate professor in the Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Shouan Zhu, associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Zhu also serves as the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Professor.

Presidential Research Scholars
In 2024, Presidential Research Scholars were selected from the subdisciplines of Arts and Humanities and Life and Biomedical Sciences.

For the Life and Biomedical Sciences category, the winners are:
- Dustin Grooms, professor in the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Sciences and Professions and associate director of the Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute.
- Vishwajeet Puri, Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Professor in Diabetes at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and co-director of the Diabetes Institute

For the Arts and Humanities category, the winners are:
- Matthew Cornish, associate professor of theater history in the School of Theater at the Chaddock + Morrow College of Fine Arts.
- Loren Lybarger, professor and chair of Classics and Religious Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.
- Ingo Trauschweiser, professor of history in the College of Arts and Sciences.

MAC Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success

The MAC Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success recognizes one full-time faculty member from each Mid-American Conference (MAC) institution each year who has shown dedication to student success and inclusion.

Community Engaged Faculty Award
The Community-Engaged Faculty Award recognizes 黑料视频 faculty members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to community engagement through their teaching, research, and/or service. This award highlights the critical role that faculty play in fostering community partnerships that enhance student learning and faculty teaching, research and scholarly activity, further institutional goals, and contribute to the public good by addressing community-identified priorities.
This year鈥檚 recipient of the Community Engaged Faculty Award is Lynn Harter, professor in the School of Communication Studies in the Scripps College of Communication.
