Social work graduate honored with Spirit of Southern Award

Before she ever sat in a college classroom, Mary Brady had already faced challenges that would shape her future in social work. This spring, she crossed the stage as a licensed professional 鈥 and the 2025 Spirit of Southern award recipient.

Brady, of Ironton, earned both her Associate in Applied Science and her Bachelor of Social Work at . She was selected for the Spirit of Southern Award, presented annually to one graduating student who excels academically and demonstrates a strong commitment to campus involvement and community service.

She explained that her interest in social work is deeply personal.

鈥淕rowing up was difficult, and I faced many personal challenges, including struggles with substance use,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hese experiences gave me a passion for helping others who face similar obstacles and led me to pursue a career in social work.鈥

That passion, combined with perseverance and education, led to a major milestone this spring 鈥 passing the Licensed Social Worker exam.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited to begin using my skills to make a positive difference in people鈥檚 lives,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 plan to encourage others toward growth and healing.鈥

Turning challenges into achievements

Brady said her time at OHIO Southern helped her realize she could transform personal hardship into purpose.

鈥淢y time at OHIO helped me realize that my past does not define me鈥攊t strengthens me,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he support and education I received pushed me to believe in my ability to advocate for others and create lasting change.鈥

Among her favorite memories at OHIO Southern were the relationships she built.

鈥淪pending time with my peers and experiencing the camaraderie we built together made my journey even more meaningful,鈥 she said.

She credits faculty mentors Dr. Joy Shytle and Dr. Glenn Abraham for their support.

鈥淭hey bring different perspectives, which I deeply appreciate, and they have consistently shown kindness and support throughout my time at OHIO,鈥 she said.

The path to graduation, Brady explained, was not easy.

鈥淥vercoming a difficult childhood and struggles with substance use were major challenges for me,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hese experiences taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of persistence in the face of adversity.鈥

To students just beginning their academic journey, Brady offers a message of encouragement.

鈥淣ever give up on yourself, even when things get hard,鈥 she said. 鈥淵our struggles can become your strength. Lean on your support systems and believe that you are capable of more than you realize.鈥

鈥淏eing an OHIO graduate means I have turned my challenges into achievements,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t symbolizes hope, perseverance, and the opportunity to help others find their own paths to success.鈥
