ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Libraries’ investment in Open Access Publishing gains momentum

ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Libraries is pleased to report that OHIO faculty have published more than 223 Open Access journal articles through a transformative license agreement with publishers Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Cambridge and the Institute of Physics, saving faculty more than $744,000 in upfront Article Publishing Charges (APCs).

Open Access publishing is the practice of making scholarly works accessible to all researchers without any financial barrier. APCs cover the costs of publication upfront, which enables prestige publishers to allow unfettered access to readers, significantly boosting the reach and impact of OHIO faculty research.

Since 2022, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Libraries has offered OHIO faculty a pool of funding through OhioLINK, Ohio’s statewide academic library consortium, to cover the upfront costs of publication. In addition to OhioLINK’s investment, ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ Libraries has agreements in place to cover some or all APC charges with Company of Biologists, BioMedCentral and SpringerOpen.

The popularity of this initiative means that OhioLINK’s funding limit for APCs will likely be reached during fall semester. If you are an OHIO faculty member planning to publish OA with one of these publishers, please submit your article as quickly as possible because funding will likely run out earlier than in previous years.

Additional need to know information

  1. Not all publishers’ journals are covered in the transformative agreement. Be sure to check before submitting to a covered journal. .
  2. The OhioLINK affiliated author, which includes ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ, needs to be the corresponding author on the manuscript and the author who handles the manuscript and correspondence during the publication process.
  3. For most of the transformative agreements, publishers will ask the author to verify the APC coverage by verifying the OhioLINK affiliation, after the manuscript acceptance and during the editing process. To verify, use the author’s ºÚÁÏÊÓƵ email to submit.
  4. For some publishers, they will only support APC coverage for so many OhioLINK articles per year. So, submitting earlier in the calendar year is best.
  5. This benefit is not limited to just faculty members.
