Fulbright Scholar Awards

Govorov

Alexander Govorov is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. He will be traveling to the University of Technology of Troyes (UTT), one of France鈥檚 leading engineering schools specializing in optoelectronic devices.

Govorov鈥檚 research focuses on photonic and bio-hybrid nanomaterials for applications in optoelectronics and energy harvesting, aligning directly with his Fulbright project at UTT.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an exciting and fast-moving field, with real-world applications such as LEDs, displays, microscopy, and even laser-based eye treatments. This collaboration will help advance both the fundamental science and its applied potential.鈥

Govorov adds that it is satisfying to see our international networking efforts recognized at the national level.

鈥淭he Fulbright is a highly competitive award, so receiving it is both humbling and deeply motivating and through it I hope to immerse myself in French culture and history, strengthen collaborative ties within France and across Europe and enjoy my time at UTT鈥攁n energetic hub for research and engineering.鈥

Nancy Sandler

Nancy Sandler is a professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences. She will be traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina, to visit the Department of Condensed Matter Physics at the Centro At贸mico Constituyentes, CNEA (Comisi贸n Nacional de Energ铆a At贸mica). There, she will carry out research using theoretical tools and numerical simulations.

Sandler, a native of Argentina, is a theoretical condensed matter physicist with expertise in modeling materials using advanced mathematics. In particular, she has worked extensively on describing the electronic and magnetic properties of graphene, the thinnest material available (a single atomic monolayer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern).

鈥淚 would like to lay the groundwork for a strong collaboration that will persist after my return. My proposal includes several projects, and not all of them will necessarily be completed by the end of my stay; thus, I expect to continue working on them in the following months. Furthermore, my colleagues in Buenos Aires are excited about the possibility of visiting OHIO in the future, and we even discussed potential student exchanges.鈥

According to Sandler, many years ago, with support from the NSF-PIRE program, OHIO established a study abroad program to foster student exchanges and collaborations with colleagues in Argentina. She noted that three OHIO graduate students each spent a quarter conducting research there and later reported this as one of the most rewarding experiences of their PhDs. She said she wants to explore alternative ways to recreate these opportunities for OHIO students through this Fulbright as well.

For her Fulbright project specifically, she will focus on the electronic properties of thin materials with mono- or few-atomic-layer thicknesses and how these properties are modified by the application of mechanical strains (deformations such as stretching or compressing, for example).

鈥淭his is a relevant issue for such thin materials because a substrate might modify how they conduct electricity or heat as they adapt their shapes to the surface of the substrate. The collaboration with my colleagues will provide the numerical techniques needed to make qualitative predictions and compare them closely to experimental data. By 鈥榩laying鈥 with different setups and realistic deformation geometries, we expect to find unique properties that eventually may find application in devices.鈥

Fulbright Scholar Awards are prestigious fellowships that offer scholars unique opportunities teach and conduct research abroad, playing a critical role in U.S. public diplomacy.
