Josh Birnbaum

Josh Birnbaum is a professor of instruction in the School of Visual Communication at 黑料视频, where he teaches photography, picture editing, digital imaging, and video storytelling courses. He has worked for the Oakland Tribune, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, The Omaha World-Herald, The Peoria Journal Star, and The Dallas Morning News. In addition, he interned at James Nachtwey's studio.

His first book, "Dream Shot: The Journey to a Wheelchair Basketball National Championship," was released via the University of Illinois Press in 2017 and photographically documents the University of Illinois men鈥檚 wheelchair basketball team, one of the first in the nation. The work chronicles the team鈥檚 journey to a national championship, memorializing a legendary team alongside its contribution to the progress of disability rights. David Guttenfelder, National Geographic photographer said of "Dream Shot," "Birnbaum's respectful and big-hearted honest photographs show us that on the court, and especially off of the court during their everyday lives, this is a team and a community of champions."

Birnbaum has a passion for social justice and has worked as a visiting artist with the Athens Photographic Project 鈥 a non-profit fine arts program that offers photography classes to community members living with persistent mental illness 鈥 where he taught advanced classes and led artists in pursuit of their creative and personal recovery goals. Every summer, he works with non-profit Circle Round the Square in Nelsonville, Ohio, to offer photography classes to at-risk youth through a summer arts and wellness camp.

Birnbaum currently volunteers as the secretary of the Athens Municipal Arts Commission, where he advocates for incorporating more local art into the public realm. He also maintains client work with select editorial and non-profit outlets. 

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Illinois, and an Master of Arts from 黑料视频鈥檚 School of Visual Communication.

Interest areas include photojournalism and documentary photography, video storytelling, documentation of music subculture, expressive photographic pedagogy for youth, media storytelling for non-profit organizations, and participatory media.

Adonis Durado

Adonis Durado is a product of advertising and editorial design with more than 20 years of professional experience as a visual journalist, art director, and design manager.

He was the former Design Director of Muscat Media Group, publisher of two major daily newspapers 鈥 the Times of Oman and Al Shabiba. During his tenure, he transformed its products from the unknown to the most-awarded publications in the Middle East, winning more than 500 international honors from the Society of News Design, Society of Publication Design, World Association of Newspapers, and the European Newspaper Award.

As a freelance design consultant, he helped launch and redesigned more than a dozen magazine and newspaper titles in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He also served as a resource speaker to design conferences and conducted workshops in the United States, India, Bangladesh, Turkey, Ukraine, UAE, Indonesia, Germany, and the Philippines.

His personal works were also recognized by the Malofiej Infographic Awards, Society of Illustrators, Type Directors Club, Communication Arts magazine, HOW magazine, Creative Quarterly Journal, Tabbie Awards, and FOLIO鈥檚 Eddie Awards.

In 2017, he received The President鈥檚 Award from the Society for News Design and the Knight Fellowship from The School of Visual Communication at 黑料视频. As a poet, he was honored with several literary awards, including the Lacaba Prize, the Faigao Prize, the Vicente Ranudo Literary Excellence Award, and the Writers鈥 Prize from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. His fourth poetry collection became a finalist in the 2019 International Book Awards.

He also wrote and contributed a chapter in the book Virtual Reality Cinema: Narrative Tips and Techniques (Focal Press / Routledge), while his works were featured and cited in the books and periodicals, including The Newspaper Designer's Handbook (McGraw-Hill), All About Mags (Sendpoints Publishing), Creative Anarchy: How to Break the Rules of Graphic Design for Creative Success (How Books).

He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising from the University of San Carlos (Philippines) and a Master of Fine Arts in Communication Media Arts from 黑料视频.

His areas of interest include book and publication design, immersive media and interactive design, and infographic and data visualization.

Tim Goheen, Director

Professor Timothy Goheen serves as Director of the Scripps College of Communication鈥檚 award-winning School of Visual Communication. Goheen came to 黑料视频 with nearly 30 years professional experience as a visual journalist, and 20 years-experience as a manager, supervisor and leader in the same field.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from James Madison College, a residential college of social sciences and public affairs within Michigan State University, Goheen began his professional career in 1986 at The State, a metropolitan daily newspaper in Columbia, S.C. (Knight Ridder Inc.). While at The State, he received multiple Society for News Design (SND) awards for infographics and South Carolina Press Association Awards for news graphics, illustration and feature page design.

In 1995, Goheen moved to Washington, D.C., to join the international news wire service Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services (KRT) as Senior Illustrator for the company鈥檚 European graphics startup. In 1997, he was promoted to Art Director of KRT Graphics, supervising artists and freelancers in both the U.S. and Europe.

A Knight Fellow at 黑料视频鈥檚 School for Visual Communication, 2005-2006, Goheen earned an Master of Arts degree while teaching undergraduate students basic and advanced infographics. In 2006, KRT became MCT when Knight Ridder Inc., was sold to the McClatchy newspaper company. That same year, Goheen took on the additional responsibility of Managing Editor of the Graphics Service, responsible for supervising all artists and Graphics Service editors. In 2008, Goheen was selected to be one of four judges in the Society for News Design鈥檚 (SND) prestigious World鈥檚 Best Designed Newspaper competition.

Goheen has worked his entire career in the field of visual communication, first as an illustrator, then a page designer, a news infographics specialist, a manager, a mentor, and a leader. In July 2014, he moved to Athens, Ohio, to become the fourth Director of the School of Visual Communication. Goheen teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in communication design, infographics, and data visualization, as well as graduate-level leadership.

Around campus, Goheen has served on the 黑料视频 Curriculum Council and been a member of UCC鈥檚 General Education Committee. He is currently the co-director of the Scripps Semester in D.C., program. In 2018, Goheen was one of the co-founders of the Visual Discovery Conference (VDC), an international intercollegiate infographics/data visualization workshop for students. VDC held its second conference at 黑料视频 in November 2019.

Outside the university, Goheen has been a board member of the Athens Dairy Barn Arts Center since 2014, and in the past, has served as the center鈥檚 Exhibitions Chair. Along with several current and former VisCom faculty, Goheen helped develop Wide Open, a biennial international juried photography exhibition at the Art Center. The first show was held in 2018.

As an industry leader in visual communication, Goheen is an active member of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), the Society for News Design (SND) and the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Gary Kirksey

Gary Kirksey has more than 25 years of experience in the field of commercial photography and has had numerous clients over the years, including Proctor & Gamble, Longaberger Corporation ,The Washington Post, The Atlanta Constitution, Miami University, Real Simple and The Cincinnati Reds. In New York City, he worked as a studio associate for Hashi Studio, a studio manager for Kan Photography. He also worked as a photographer for Lighthouse Productions in Cincinnati.

His photographs have been exhibited widely across the country. Kirksey's photographs have been published in numerous books, including "Committed to the Image: Contemporary Black Photographers" and publications, such as Life Magazine, two Quilt National books and The Wall Street journal. His current projects in progress are "Documenting Tuskegee Airmen" and "A Vanishing Generation: 44601 and Beyond."

Catherine Penrod

Catherine "Cat" Penrod is a two-time 黑料视频 alumna (BSJ 鈥99 and MBA 鈥00). After graduating from OHIO, she began a career as an account executive for Cumulus Radio in Montgomery, AL where she created marketing plans that utilized radio advertising to help grow local, regional, and national businesses. After several years as an account executive, Penrod moved into the financial services industry where she worked both as a financial advisor and internal wholesaler.

In 2007, Cat Penrod returned to 黑料视频 to begin her teaching career in the College of Business where she spent the next 17 years developing, teaching, and directing the business communication curriculum. She also served as the founding director for the Center for Professional Communication in the College of Business from 2009 to present and director of the Integrated Business Cluster from 2013 鈥 2021.

During her 17 years of teaching business communication, Cat Penrod began to focus more on the role of visual communication in the creation of effective messages. She attended Ohio State University to receive a certificate in User Experience/User Interface design. Cat Penrod is excited to bring her business background and passion for UX/UI to the School of Visual Communication.

Terrance Reimer

Reimer is a new media visual artist exploring the integration of communicating experiential storytelling concepts and ideas using sound, video, and extended reality technologies. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in the multidisciplinary communication media arts program at 黑料视频 in 2020, studying documentary film and extended reality storytelling. His immersive VR thesis film, 鈥淲alking Past Abandoned Houses, I Think of Eric,鈥 shares personal poetic testimony about the opioid epidemic in southeastern Ohio. The award-winning film was an official selection in the 2021 Fine Arts Film Festival at the Venice Institute of Contemporary Art in Venice, California.

Prior to his MFA studies, Reimer started his career as a photojournalist and since 1999, has been collaborating with many of the most renowned contemporary photographers of our time, creating fine art exhibition prints as a master digital printmaker. His photographic work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, and is included in the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara (CA) Museum of Art. He completed an artist-in-residence and served as a professor of photography at the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Taliesin in 2003.

Stan Alost

Retired Professor

 

Stan Alost has worked in the news industry for more than 20 years as a photojournalist, picture editor, designer, and in management. That experience included newspapers, wire services, and freelance work for numerous clients in and outside of the journalism field. He holds an undergraduate degree in Mass Communication from Louisiana State University, and a Master of Science degree from 黑料视频. Beyond newspapers, his work has been published in books and magazines including Life, Ohio 24/7, Newsphotographer, and Stern. Additionally, he co-authored research published in the Newspaper Research Journal as well as papers presented to AEJMC. 

While faculty, Alost worked with former students to produce their books, including Alysia Burton Steele's "Delta Jewels: In search of my grandmother鈥檚 wisdom," Josh Birnbaum鈥檚 "Dream Shot: The journey to a wheelchair basketball national championship," Lauren Pond's "Test of Faith: Signs, serpents, and salvation," and Daniel Owen's "The In-Between Land." Beyond the student work, he contributed a chapter in "The Scripps School: Its stories, people, and legacy," and authored "An Introduction to Visual Communication: Understanding the language we see."

Alost helped to steer the award-winning annual student-led multimedia project , and has done so since 2007. He was also the organizer and moderator of the annual National Press Photography Association Best of Photojournalism still photography, picture editing, and multimedia contests from 2001 until 2018. He also had the privilege of helping facilitate and mentor at both the  multimedia conferences at University of Mississippi, created by Alyssa Burton Steele, and the Journalism in the Public Interest and Journalist as Witness workshops held at Allegheny College and Guilford College, created by Cheryl Hatch.

Over the years Alost has helped guide eight students to Fulbright scholarships and two students to recognition by the Duke University , and several students to Student Enhancement Grants funding their projects. Other students have been awarded significant prizes in international competitions including College Photographer of the Year, as well as awards in the Pictures of the Year competition, the Best of Photojournalism competition, and the Ohio Press Photographers Association contest.

He was awarded the University Professor award in 2010, as well as selected for the Bruning Teaching Academy for outstanding teaching at 黑料视频 in 2017.

Terry Eiler

Terry Eiler is a field researcher, magazine photographer, documentary photojournalist and co-founder of 黑料视频鈥檚 School of Visual Communication and the school鈥檚 former director. As a publication photographer, he produced material for the National Geographic Society鈥檚 books and magazines over a 20-year period. His work has been featured in GEO, Sunset, and Paris Match.

As a documentary photographer, Eiler has been involved in Project Documerica, the 1970 project funded by the EPA to record the state of the environment prior to major air and water legislation. He has been a field researcher on four Library of Congress American Folklife Center projects, the Calvert Marine Museum project on the Patuxent River Watermen and a project documenting the people of West Virginia鈥檚 Coal River Valley for the American Folklife Center. His work has been the visual anchor of five books.

In 1994, Eiler was named the Kodak Professor to Australia. He is the chair of the academic advisory board of the Salt Center for documentary studies in Portland, Maine. He serves on the National Press Photographers Association's contest governing board for the Best in Photojournalism annual competition. He is the director of the annual Scotland Field School in Documentary Photojournalism. As a professor at 黑料视频 he has twice been named University Professor for his teaching excellence and in 1993 was presented 黑料视频鈥檚 Alumni Teaching Excellence award.

He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography from 黑料视频. After completing post-graduate studies at the University of Missouri, he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in photography from 黑料视频.

Julie Elman

Professor Emerita

Julie M. Elman has more than 15 years of experience in the newspaper industry, designing, photographing and picture editing at a handful of newspapers, including The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Va. She has won numerous awards of excellence for her work from the Society for News Design.
 
During her 17 years of teaching at 黑料视频, Elman taught undergraduate and graduate courses in publication design, editorial illustration, typography, picture editing and creative process. Before making her way to the School of Visual Communication at 黑料视频, Elman taught photojournalism at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and design at Virginia Wesleyan College.
 
Elman's illustrated book, "Fear, Illustrated: Transforming What Scares Us," was published in 2017. Elman is the co-author of "The Newspaper Designer鈥檚 Handbook," 7th edition. She also designed the book "The Rise of Barack Obama" for Pete Souza, the former Chief Official White House Photographer.
She has participated as a faculty member in numerous design and photography workshops, including the Society for News Design Quick Course, Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop, Truth With a Camera and the Missouri Photo Workshop.
 
Elman was selected for the Teaching Excellence Award at 黑料视频 in 2012.
She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Commercial Art from the University of Dayton and an Master of Fine Arts in Photography from 黑料视频.

Sam Girton

Sam Girton has more than 25 years of professional experience as a photographer, web, and print designer. He has worked for numerous clients, including IKEA, Trip Advisor, One Sight, The American Bar Association, PBS, Ted Talks, The New York Times, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, The Cincinnati Enquirer, Electronic Data Systems, Clear Channel Communications, Foam Magazine, Marietta Memorial Hospital, Lineberger Cancer Center, Rocky Boots and World Book Marketing.

He has led many workshops, including The Ohio Arts Council Summer Media Institute, and has experience in conducting study programs: Fashion Photography and Videography in Grand Cayman, Documentary Storytelling in Ireland and German, Design in Asia, as well as a design workshop at the University of Guyana (a USAID-funded workshop).

He has collaborated on special projects with The School of Interior Architecture and The School of Media Arts and Studies, which resulted in student work that was displayed in The Chicago Art Institute and recognized internationally by the media. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Girton is the faculty advisor for The 黑料视频 Multimedia Society and has served as the Director of Academic Technology for the 黑料视频 Information Technology department.

Girton teaches courses in Commercial Photography, Desktop Publishing, Motion Graphics, Audio/Video Production and 3D Modeling. He has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography from 黑料视频. Girton was selected for the University Professor award for the 2012-2013 academic year.

His interest areas include Commercial Photography, Motion Graphics, 3D Modeling, Audio/Video Production, Project Management, Education Abroad Programs, and Alumni Relations,

John Grimwade

John taught informational graphics in the VisCom program for five years. Before joining 黑料视频, he was an instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he founded the program鈥檚 first infographics course.
 
In his long professional career, John was graphics director of The Times (London), Cond茅 Nast Traveler, Cond茅 Nast Portfolio, Eight by Eight, and information graphics consultant for Popular Science.
 
His infographics have appeared in many magazines, newspapers, books and corporate publications in the U.S. and Europe. John has won several major awards, including the Society for News Design鈥檚 Lifetime Achievement Award, the Malofiej Award (for advancing journalism in information graphics), and the British Press Award for infographics.

Larry Hamel-Lambert

Professor Emeritus

Larry Hamel-Lambert has 25 years experience working in the industry as a photographer and picture editor. Past employers include The Cleveland Press, The Cincinnati Post, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, The Washington (D.C.) Times, The Providence (R.I.) Journal, USA Today, and The Associated Press Washington, D.C., bureau.

His photographs have received recognition from The Ohio News Photographers Association, the Society of News Design, The Associated Press and the Atlanta Seminar. His photographs have appeared in magazines, books, and exhibitions. Currently, he is a frequent photographic contributor to Woodcraft Magazine.

Hamel-Lambert holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism degree from Bowling Green State University and a Masters of Arts in Photography degree from 黑料视频.

His main areas of interest involve creating an architectural series of large-format, black-and-white images of country churches in Ohio, making large-format portraits using vintage lenses, and documenting community projects.

Hamel-Lambert teaches courses in Visual Communication Skills, Still Life and Architectural Photography, and Business and Studio Practices.
