Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) program takes a broad perspective on English language teaching. Depending on students’ chosen career path, the curriculum prepares graduates to teach English as a foreign language to different learner populations, from elementary to post-secondary schools.

Requiring only two semesters of full-time study, this program permits participants to earn an MTESOL degree within a relatively short time to begin or return to teaching immediately thereafter.

Careers with an MTESOL

The Linguistics Department has a strong record of preparing students for Ph.D. study elsewhere. Approximately one-fourth to one-third of our M.A. graduates go on to advanced study at some time in their careers, and they are admitted to top-ranked theoretical and applied programs in universities in the U.S. and other countries.
