Welcome to the ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ Hearing, Speech and Language Clinic (HSLC), located on the campus of ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ in Athens. The HSL Clinic offers an extensive range of services for all age groups.

Our experienced staff of audiologists and speech-language pathologists assess and treat hearing, balance, tinnitus, language, speech, voice and swallowing. The clinic offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment services for all ages — infant through adult. The clinic is open year round in Grover Center on Richland Avenue in Athens.

Audiologic Evaluations

Comprehensive Hearing Evaluations

Our clinic is equipped to evaluate hearing of individuals from birth throughout the lifespan.

Testing

The Hearing, Speech, and Language Clinic has a variety of facilities and equipment to perform tests to determine:

  • Hearing thresholds across various frequencies
  • Type and severity of hearing loss   
  • Softest level of speech recognized
  • Clarity of speech at a conversational level
  • Understanding of speech in background noise

We also can test the status of:

  • Middle ear (Immittance)
  • Outer hair cells (OAEs)
  • Auditory nerve (Acoustic Reflex)
  • Brainstem (ABR)

Balance Assessment

Our clinic has both Videonystagmograpghy (VNG) and Electronystagmography (ENG) equipment to assess if balance issues are central or peripheral.

Auditory Processing Evaluations

This test battery is used to examine the functioning of the auditory processing pathway. It is performed on school-aged children with normal hearing who exhibit academic difficulties possibly due to auditory processing. Auditory processing problems also can be present in those with traumatic brain injuries.

Tinnitus Management

We offer Progressive Tinnitus Management (PTM) to help patients cope with their tinnitus through:

  • Group or Individualized Education
  • Sound Therapy
  • Relaxation Techniques

Aural Rehabilitation Services

This service provides a form of therapy in which hearing-impaired individuals are taught to improve their ability to communicate.

Products and Hearing Aid Services

Hearing Aid Selection & Fitting

We offer a full range of hearing aid services from multiple hearing aid manufacturers. Hearing aids can be adjusted and fine-tuned to a patient’s amplification requirements and comfort levels. Follow-up outcome assessments are performed at 30 days, six months and one year. All fees are included in the price of the hearing aid. Hearing aid consultations are free of charge!

Hearing Aid Verification

We utilize state-of-the-art technology that accurately measures the amount of sound reaching a patient’s eardrum. Used to fine-tune hearing aids to accurately match hearing aid amplification targets to specific to a patient’s ear acoustics.

Custom Products

We sell custom products to accommodate the needs of our clients to prevent damage, including hearing protection, musician earplugs, iPod inserts and swimmers plugs.

Speech-Language Pathology Services

Our clinicians can help patients of all ages who experience speech and language difficulties, such as:

  • Articulation: Difficulty saying certain sounds.
  • Language disorders/delays: Misunderstanding what other people say and/or not using words or the appropriate words to communicate.
  • Voice: Continually hoarse or experiencing pain after talking for very long.
  • Stuttering: Words or sounds not coming out smoothly.
  • Accent modification: Difficulty saying some English sounds or difficulty understanding the English language.
  • Swallowing: Coughing or choking when eating some foods or drinking some liquids.
  • Infant Feeding: Difficulty feeding an infant, toddler or child certain foods or liquids.
  • Aural (re)habilitation: Communication skills impacted by a hearing loss.
  • School-aged language: An elementary school child who has difficulty understanding that letters stand for sounds and/or a child who struggles with understanding what teachers say.

Accepted Insurance

We accept private insurance plans. Please check with your provider to confirm our participation in your insurance plan. We also accept Medicaid and Medicare.

Unless other arrangements have been made in advance by you or your health insurance provider, full payment is due at time of service.

Finding Us

The ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ Hearing, Speech & Language Clinic is located in Grover Center, room W174. Our entrance is on the first floor of Grover Center about midway through the main hallway across from the Atrium Cafe.

The parking lot is located next to Margaret M. Walter Hall and across from Peden Football Stadium (Lot 134). Parking passes will be mailed prior to your appointment. Several spaces are reserved for clinic patients, yet you may park in any standard spot. Please make sure your hang tag is properly displayed.
