Bachelor's Degrees in Adolescent-to-Young Adult Education

The Adolescent-to-Young Adult (AYA) program offers a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) that leads to a teaching license in grades 7-12 in one subject area (language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies). The program design is grounded in national and state standards and emphasizes a commitment to equity, justice, and diversity.

BS6306
Integrated Language Arts

Spark a love for literature, writing, and expression in grades 7–12. This program centers on developing young minds through storytelling, argumentation, media literacy, and critical thought. Through practical teaching experiences and a focus on adolescent development, you’ll gain the tools to inspire students in both classic and modern communication. Graduates earn Ohio licensure to teach English Language Arts in middle and high schools.

Integrated Mathematics

Bring numbers to life and make problem-solving relevant in today’s world. This program prepares you to teach grades 7–12 by blending deep mathematical theory with classroom practice. You'll focus on algebra, geometry, statistics, and beyond — learning to engage students with real-world math they can apply to their futures. Completion leads to Ohio licensure in secondary mathematics education.

Integrated Social Studies

Help students explore the past, understand the present, and shape the future. This program equips you to teach history, civics, geography, and economics with an emphasis on social responsibility and global awareness. With hands-on classroom practice and an interdisciplinary approach, you'll be ready for licensure and impactful teaching in grades 7–12.

Integrated Science

Inspire scientific curiosity and critical thinking across biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. This comprehensive program trains you to teach the full spectrum of secondary science, focusing on lab skills, inquiry-based learning, and educational equity. Graduates are eligible for licensure to teach science in grades 7–12 across Ohio.

The AYA program integrates classroom learning with hands-on fieldwork from the very first year. The exact sequence of courses and field hours may vary depending on your subject area and when you enter the program, but the following table provides a general overview of what to expect.

Admissions Information

The following information applies to all Bachelor's Degrees in Adolescent Adult Education.

Students enrolled in teacher education programs (known as teacher candidates) must meet additional requirements to continue in the program (see below for additional details):

  • Admission to Teacher Candidacy (typically at the end of the first year)
  • Admission to Advanced Standing (typically at the end of the second year)
  • Admission to the Professional Internship (typically at the end of the third year)

Freshman/First-Year Admission

No requirements beyond university admission requirements.

Change of Program Policy

Current ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ students who would like to declare a teacher education program must have a 3.0 ºÚÁÏÊÓÆµ GPA before changing majors.

External Transfer Admission

No requirements beyond university admission requirements.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduates are eligible to apply for teacher licensure in the state of Ohio and will have the skills needed for employment in public, private, charter and magnet schools. Graduates may also go on to work in educational consulting, the community and social services fields, business development or higher education. With additional education graduates may be eligible for educational leadership positions.

  • CARE Program


    Candidates can complete the standard AYA program or can apply to participate in the Creative, Active, and Reflective Educators (CARE) program. CARE is a unique partnership with the Federal Hocking School District and includes a focus on democratic education, specialized coursework, and additional classroom experiences that emphasize the whole child from K-12.

  • Overseas Student Teaching


    The Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program offers teacher candidates the unique opportunity to live abroad for an entire semester while completing their professional internship. The program offers students professional and personal growth in ways that are increasingly important for living and teaching in the United States.
